I am behind on posts.
Day 3 was another struggle. The air was difficult to read and getting low was a bad situation. With some wind we called a straight downwind. This also gives the option to fly around storms if they present themselves. A big group of us grabbed the first start and immediately we were all struggling to keep up with Jonny. He charged hard and lead like a champ. We shedded groups of 5 until our group was trimmed down to Jonny, Kraig, Robin, Glen, and I. Bubba hung in for awhile then missed a climb.
Then we hit Lamesa and hit the rough times that have haunted us randomly most days this year. I hung in my own climb as we all struggled to get up over Lamesa. The slow climnig allowed a few pilots to catch back up. Andreas and Paris joined me as the leaders had left a few minutes before. They had glided to the right across some blue and we too a route left to chase some clouds. As it turns out the line was more of a penisula into the blue, rather then a real street. Paris charged ahead far below giving me a false sense of confidence. Andreas headed 90 degrees to course line to grab a cloud and I continued on. 10 minutes later I was on the deck 16 miles short of goal. That seems to be the magic distance for me. About 10 pilots scratched into goal with Jonny (deservedly) winning the day.
