Today started out better then any of the last few here in Canoa. The sky showed mostly blue over the ocean and cummies overhead. By midday it had filled in only to clear out again later. Dustin flexed his tandem muscles all morning down at the beach where Raul sets up a towing operation. At low tide the ocean reccedes hundreds of feet leaving behind a huge wide flat swath to work with. It is beautiful. The tow up onto the cliffs above, soar for a bit, then back down for another go.
Since we had sun today Raul called the same task but with the smaller turnpoint diameters. That meant we had to cross 2 more technical gaps on the VERY low ridges out by the turnpoint. Lucky for us those ridges are set back a few hundred meters from the beach allowing a more active thermal feed into those ridges. Without that I think it might not be possible to cross the gaps.
Dustin pulled out the bag of tricks at the start and nailed it perfect. I was higher and late but quickly traded that altitude to chase him down. By the time we got back to the ridge we were within a second of each other. It doesn´t sound like much but it is when you are stuck behind another wing against a ridge! I just kept my VG line uncleated and wrapped around my finger. That way if anything got weird I could dump a handfull of VG fast. The Wills cleat allows you to do that easily with precise control.
By the river crossing I was up Dustin´s butt but not enough to get around. Same on the next ridge until we took different lines to the TP. I went longer on the ridge and milked, he charged out front. Before crossing back to the river ridge I used the extra altitude to secure the high seat and leave earlier. This edge proved to be the trick and I held the gap the second half of the first lap and the second lap as well. Really, anything
Maybe we can get some video fired up soon.
I think Raul was third so that makes Wills 1, 2, 3 again.
